“Get Out Of My Head, Get Into My Heart.” – Brett Dennen

If there is such a thing as a music guru, mine is definitely Brett Dennen. I first came across Brett’s music on the television show House M.D. a few years ago. I listened to a couple of his albums back then and although I enjoyed them, it wasn’t until this past summer that I really understood his music. His most recent album, Smoke and Mirrors is one of the best albums I’ve ever heard and I believe it’s no coincidence that at this moment in my life,  I can relate to every single song on the track list.

One of the songs on the album is called “Out of My Head.” You know those moments when you can’t stop thinking about the negative things in life even though it does absolutely nothing but weigh you down? Sometimes depression from the past and worry or fear for the future can consume your mind. Egotistical thoughts will take you out of your heart and your natural spirit and bring you into a head full of doubt. Getting out of your head and into your heart is about getting back in touch with your inner child. It’s about listening to the person you truly are and feeling the feelings you truly feel without the negative effects of the society you’ve become accustomed to. How did you feel when you were a child? Did you use your imagination to bring life to your dreams? Did you see everyone around you as an equal and worthy human being? Did you feel you were capable of doing anything because of how big the world seemed to you at the time? I know I did.

That childhood innocence can seem unrealistic, but it’s the only way to reflect your inner child and find out where your true passion lies. It’s only when you’re in this raw state of mind that you can conquer the outside world to the best of your ability and give unconditional love to yourself and others. How can you get out of your head and into your heart? Meditation and/or prayer is a good place to start. If you’re not into that sort of thing, listen to an inspiring song or read an inspiring book (maybe one from your childhood) and that can really help you to relax and get in tune with your inner being. Life is not easy, but if we can regularly take a moment to get into our hearts, we’ll be capable of anything. It all starts with a positive thought. Glow & shine bright! xo
