“Be Impeccable With Your Word.” – Don Miguel Ruiz

One of my best friends recently gave me a book called The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz. In this book, the author talks about self-limiting beliefs that we’re all taught through society’s rules and the way we were brought up. To help us learn how to let go of these limiting beliefs and gain a perspective that will lead us to a happier life, Ruiz presents four agreements we must make to ourselves. His words struck a chord with me and reminded me of everything I’ve learned in the last few months. In order to gain happiness from the world and from others, you must first gain happiness from within. You must learn to love yourself and retrain your brain in order to replace insecure agreements you already made to yourself over the years. Replacing these agreements with the agreements Ruiz describes in his book will help you transform your life in ways you never imagined possible. The first of these agreements is to “be impeccable with your word.”

The word impeccable is defined as “without sin.” Instead of describing sin in a religious sense, Ruiz describes it as “anything that you do which goes against yourself.” To be impeccable with your word is to use the power of the spoken word in a positive manner. When others speak negative words about you, don’t let the core of yourself agree with them. Replace any feelings of guilt, shame or anger with love for yourself. Understand perfection is not real and mistakes should be forgiven. The words you choose to use will reflect how you feel about yourself. Always speak in a way you would like to be spoken to and never gossip. If you are filled with positive thoughts and self love, the need to gossip will disappear. You will see others as equal.

I will include the other three agreements in future posts, but for now, use this first agreement as a stepping stone for a new perspective. If you’re able to master the practice of being impeccable with your word, everything else will get easier. The first step is the hardest, but I believe you can do it because I’ve done it, and we both hold an equal amount of power to our happiness. Glow & shine bright! xo
